I read some books in English, those were the ones by J.R.R.Tolkien, E.Seton-Thomson, J.K.Rowling, Ch.Dickens, A.Conan-Doyle etc. I guess they're all pretty fine except Dickens. Too boring, you know. I'm looking forward to reading some books of Shakespeare and some Classic English authors. I like everything from Middle Ages

Go pick Stephen King. His English is superb. It's not downgraded, his style is well thought and reflects various social layers. I'd recommend his novels from 'Different Seasons' like 'The Breathing Method' for instance. And finally feel the difference between the original and faded Russian translations.

I just finished reading 'The old man and the sea' by Ernest Hemingway in original. If you looking for a book which can help you improve ur lang skillz, I recommend this book. Also I recommend 'For whom the bell tolls', if u like E. Hemingway.

My favorite book - '1984' by George Orwell. Must read this book if you think that freedom in society now is just illusory.

Now I started reading 'Stone belt' By Jevgenij Fyodorov. The book about the developing of metallurgy in Siberia. Just well-written historical book. The book isn't translated to any language. Recommend if u like history and if u know russian, ofc.

who's the best writer in American literature?

for my money, that's the question which in no way can be answered..
Same as one would ask 'who's the best Russian (German, Swedish, ..., whatever) writer or poet?' For some Tolstoy and Twain are genius, for others (including me) they're no more than ungifted scribblers. Tastes differ and it's all said about that. Me in particular, talking about the American Classics, I like a lot of Dreiser and Steinbeck and can't hold Hawthorne (but 'The Scarlet Letter'). So I'd rather accept the point that it's a bit incorrect (with certain exceptions of course) to assess the personalities in literature on the whole, for in most cases they're way too versatile to be endowed with just 'like A 'cause he rulez' / 'hate B 'cause he sucks'. An eminent work doesn't make an eminent artist yet and vice-versa.
Either way, it's one's own trouble who to admire and read and who to despise and burn..

Well, speaking about Russian (English, German) literature no definite answer can be given. But to my mind America has its best writer. It's Edgar Allan Poe. It's impossible to compare him with any other. Some of his works are complete fail but several are almost perfect.
